Blumhouse had a massive hit with the derivative M3GAN, a movie about a robot that takes things a bit too far. The flick opened to $30.4 million going on to notch up a very solid $180 million Worldwide. Unfortunately rather than deciphering why the movie worked, or indeed if anyone wanted a sequel, Blumhouse have forged ahead with M3GAN 2.0 which has absolutely bombed, opening to a poor $10.2 million. Currently the sequel stands at $32 million world wide, at time of writing.
Naturally Jason Blum reckons he knows why the movie failed, which would lead one to ask, hey Jas if you know why it failed then why the heck did you release the disaster of a sequel or make it in the first place? Hindsight is always 20/20 dude, the trick is to be able to work out what they movie shouldn't be made before spending the budget. Anyways the reason M3GAN 2.0 failed according to Jason is, they tried to change genres, they put the movie out in the summer, they tried to make her look different, and more importanly they tried to turn the titular character from a black hat to a white hat. Wow you don't say Mr Blum.
Perhaps the simplist answers are pretty much where things went wrong. Firstly, did anyone want a sequel, not all movies need a sequel, there's that lightening in a bottle thing. A whole bunch of people who saw the original didn't actually like it, and who can blame them, seen it all before got the tee. Seriously a teen orientated horror movies dropping in tent pole movie season, what could possibly go wrong.
Personally I thought the first movie was overrated cringe and had no desire to see a sequel.
